Director Yarrow Cheney’s 2018 film THE GRINCH captures the Christmas spirit – and the real reason for the season – perfectly.
The founder and publisher of Movieguide®, Dr. Ted Baehr, celebrated THE GRINCH’s balance of the emotions of “fear and anger with humor, with the light,” especially in a scene where the townspeople sing about Jesus.
“I’m so glad you feel that way because it’s such a beautiful, realistic kind of scene,” Cheney said. “You know, we as Christians are so happy with our faith, especially around Christmas, and to have the Grinch’s point of view, these guys are a little bit presumptuous, and to be humorous but also sincere and show where he starts, knowing where he’s going.
Movieguide® honored the film’s strong Christian worldview and celebration of Jesus’ birth with a Teddy Bear Award®.
THE GRINCH is a precious, delightful, exquisitely made film. The colorful animation shows incredible imagination. The humor is delightful. Love is heartwarming. It is well designed, well written and well organized. The message of the film is that Christmas can triumph over the meanest, most alienated heart. It features loving parents and children, a cheerful community of inspired Whos, and a great character arc for the Grinch. Plus, it features great Christmas carols that focus on Jesus Christ and his redeeming love. MOVIEGUIDE® fell in love with THE GRINCH (2018). We think you will too.

Cheney’s next project? An adaptation of his book ‘Superworld: Save Noah’.
A summary of the book reads:
Every twelve-year-old child sometimes feels like he or she doesn’t fit in, but Noah takes this to a whole new level. When a meteor crashed into Earth on his seventh birthday, the entire planet gained superpowers… except Noah.
Thanks to his aluminum foil superhero costume, Noah’s powers were deflected onto his little sister. He’s literally the only normal person in all of Superworld. He can’t fly. He cannot climb tall buildings. He can’t turn broccoli into candy. (And of course his little sister got double powers. Naturally.) And yet… when the city’s biggest, baddest villain plots to take over Superworld forever, normal Noah and his super-charged best friends are the ones who might just save the day. Serious.
“This adaptation is directed by husband and wife duo Yarrow and Carrie Cheney. The Cheneys have had an illustrious animation career, having been involved in classic animated films such as THE POWERPUFF GIRLS MOVIE (2002), THE LORAX (2012) and the DESPICABLE ME series. Yarrow would make his co-directorial debut with THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS (2016), then go on to direct solo with Benedict Cumberbatch’s THE GRINCH (2018). reported last year.
